SCAPINI for INTERNI

A staircase in the heart of Milan, designed by architect Massimo Castagna, where an existing structure becomes the defining feature of the space.

INTRODUCTION

The project began with an existing staircase and a question: how to transform it without rebuilding it. Scapini Atelier engineered a bespoke steel substructure, shaped to carry an open-book marble cladding — the stone cut and matched so that its veining runs uninterrupted from the first step to the last, as though the entire flight had been drawn from a single block. Volumes were kept deliberately thin, and every metal detail designed to disappear into the line rather than interrupt it. The result reads as lightness, which is the hardest thing to build.

THE FINISHES

The metal is acid-treated in London Smoke Black — a deep, mineral tone that holds light rather than reflecting it. The surface shifts with the hour, moving between charcoal and warm grey, and gives the staircase depth against the pale marble. Nothing is painted: the colour belongs to the steel itself. Architecture: Massimo Castagna · Metalwork: Scapini Atelier.
